In 1922, AT&T needed a standard way to mount telephone relays in their central offices. They chose 19 inches. It fit their equipment and was a convenient width for a technician to reach across while standing.

That decision is currently housing the hardware running artificial intelligence.

Walk into an AWS data center, a colocation facility, or look at the physical architecture of an Nvidia GPU cluster designed for training large language models. The compute units mount into metal racks that are exactly 19 inches wide, in vertical increments of exactly 1.75 inches. This is EIA-310, the international rack standard. There is nothing inherently optimal about 19 inches for cooling modern processors or routing fiber optic cables. The dimension was chosen for copper wire switchboards.

Here is how a telephone relay becomes a destiny.

When the first commercial computers arrived in the mid-twentieth century, engineers needed somewhere to put them. AT&T's 19-inch telecom racks were cheap, available, and already had an established supply chain for every bracket, screw, and rail. The computers went into the telephone racks. As the industry grew, the dimension locked in. Today, changing the width of a server would require changing the racks. Changing the racks would require changing the raised-floor grids. Changing the grids would require redesigning the cooling aisles and power distribution pathways of every data center on earth. The switching cost is effectively infinite.

A telephone operator's reach, in 1922, became a permanent constraint on the machines running the twenty-first century.

Last week this newsletter corrected the horse's-rear-end story: Rome did not set the railroad gauge. But the principle the meme was reaching for is real, and the rack is its cleaner proof. No folklore required. No Roman chariots. Just a technician, a workbench, and a measurement that seemed temporary.

The Roman Operating System calls this the standard's shadow: every measurement you take today casts forward in time further than you can see. The Antonine Column still stands in Rome. The 19-inch rack still houses the machines.

Build as if it will last. It will.
